This is a great site - as a maritime historian (of the China coast) have long been interested in Ivon's life and work. The article accurately points out that Ivon helped C.Y. Tung establish his shipping company in Shanghai in 1941 and Hong Kong in 1947. Tung went on to become the greatest individual Chinese shipwowner, including buying Cunard's QUEEN ELIZABETH which he renamed SEAWISE UNIVERSITY, and ordering the world's largest ship ever, the tanker SEAWISE GIANT. According to the Guiness Book, Tung's sons are in 2017 taking delivery of the world's largest containerships, starting with the OOCL HONG KONG:

Tung was very appreciative of Ivon's role as a foreign nominee, General Manager and Secretary of his company and according to Tung's published diary, after the war Tung specially went to Watford where he visited his old friend Ivon on Sunday July 25, 1948.

Tony,
There are a few extracts and illustrations I would like to send you. Is there some way I can upload them to the site?

Stephen I am not sure. Easiest might be to e mail to me and I can do it - sourced to you obviously. apbanham@gmail.com . Also I have uploaded to Google all of the photos we took of the contents of the two albums of Donnelly material held by the National Library of Ireland. If you email me I can invite you to view the album.

As far as I can tell the C.Y.Tung diary only exists in Chinese. Is that right ??

As far as I am aware, the diary, which commences in February 1948, is published only in Chinese. The Donnelly entries read as follows in English translation:
Sunday, July 25
This morning I went to Watford to visit Donnelly (footnote) and then to Oxford with Kuo Yang-Mo, Mr. Feng from Pacific Insurance Co. and Chuang Yu-Jen, who is a good football player.
Footnote reads:
i.e. Ivon Donnelly, a British expert on the shipping industry in China who wrote articles on its early development. He met C. Y. Tung in Tianjin in the 1930s and became manager of CMT when it was established in Shanghai in 1941.
I am emailing you separately.
Regards,
Stephen
