Fascinating! I have been looking for Kelly & Walsh's publications, in any form, for a year as I am working on a research project about this notable publisher in East Asia. Could you kindly tell me more about your grandfather's connection with K & W? MANY THANKS!!!

Not sure quite what to tell you.My grandfather published several books through K & W . The first was a small monograph entitled "Chinese Junks" which was a series of black and white sketches with descriptions published around 1920. This is fairly hard to find but not impossible. This was sufficiently successful that he published " Chinese Junks and Other Native Craft " which includes the 6 colour plates on the blog as well as a number other black and white sketches . I think this reached 3 editions over the period 1924 - 1939 and is pretty widely available. Interestingly a Singapore firm , Graham Brash Publishing , has published a small paperback version - came out in the early 80s . K & W also produced a series of tourist post cards based on his junk water colours and watercolours of Yangtze scenes,You can occasionally find these on E Bay. I recently acquired the originals of the watercolours in C J & O N C which were in the London offices of John Swire & Sons . Cornell Plant ( "the Pilot" ) published "Glimpses of the Yangtze " through K & W which book was illustrated by my grandfather . Donnelly also wrote " The China Coast" which K & W published as well as a "tourist guide" to the Hai Ho river from Tientsin to the Taku Forts. I dont recall off the top of my head whether he did that through K & W . Last he produced a small booklet with photographs and descriptions of a series of accurate junk models made by a Shanghai firm. Again I dont recall whether this was K & W but will check.

Would be most interested to see the final product of your research and curious to know why you decided to pursue it.

Many thanks for your reply! I did find the two titles you mentioned in Hong Kong libraries (as I am from HK) but have not yet managed to have a look of them. I did not know your grandfather's watercolours were reproduced as postcards by K & W until I browsed your blog. I knew K & W published postcards based on real photos though.

One of my reasons of doing this project is similar to your interest on China. My great-grandfather and grandfather lived in Shanghai from 1920s to 1930s. My grandfather could not recall his memories of K & W though.

This is my email address: hoitowong@gmail.com. Hope that we could keep contact or I can tell you more about K & W if you will be interested.
