I.A.Donnelly

I.A.Donnelly

Donnelly produced a book on junks entitled "Chinese Junks and other River Craft" This was one of the earliest if not the earliest books on junks written by a westerner. It contains a number of pen and ink illustrations as well as a number of colour plates of his own watercolours. This book was preceded by a small book of ink sketches of junks "Chinese Junks" published in 1920 whose popularity prompted the second book.He also illustrated a book by Cornell Plant "The Pilot" -- "Glimpses of the Yangtze Gorges".

In 1933 he published a guide to the Hai - Ho (Sea River) from Taku Bar to Tientsin (where my mother was born).

Do you have any family records relating to correspondence to or about Captain Plant? Captain Plant and his wife died tragically in 1921 en route to Hong Kong and left behind two adopted Chinese daughters. My grandmother and her sister it turns out, were the two girls traveling with the Plants at the time of their deaths. I am researching Captain Plant and was wondering if you have any information that might be relevant?
